The Science
The purple tooth whitening colour correcting toothpastes claim to conseal stains and improve brightness by utlising colour ocrrecting technology. This is based on weak science. Tao et al., (2017) investigated the immediate effect that pigments within toothpastes has on LABORATORY teeth which revealed a lighter appearance in enamel immediately following brushing the teeth. Some of the teeth in these studies were cow teeth, not human teeth. The toothpaste provides an optical illusion making the teeth appear whiter while the toothpaste residue is on the tooth. Unfortunately, HUMAN teeth must compete with the cheek, tongue, saliva, lips and food. This constant lubrication and friction means that the pigmented toothpaste isn't retained on the teeth and so the object to create the optical illusion is lost. Pigmented toothpastes give immediate, very short term, temporary results at best.
An independent study published in the journal of esthethic restorative dentistry by Merieles et al., (2020) tested various whitening toothpastes on human subjects in a double-blind controlled randomised trial (a very strong way to conduct scientific methods). They found: "There were no significant differences in the whitening efficacy between whitening and conventional toothpastes. Neither of the dentifrices was as effective as at-home bleaching."
